Short-term rent for summer in Docklands, Melbourne, Victoria for 1 1/2 months?
I will be in victoria, docklands which is in melbourne, AUS this summer from May 14th-End of June and am looking for a place to live. I am a student from Atlanta, Georgia in the United States doing my internship at the YMCA Docklands. I am not sure if I should be looking at renting properties because I won’t be signing a 6-month lease or anything…but was not sure if places have a 1-month/pay-as-you-go rental agreement. Anyways, my budget is a max of $150 p/w and I have been looking at lots of possible properties around Docklands that are in my budget but I just need to know if these are out of the question since I wil only be there 1 1/2 months. What kind of a place should I look at it to live in? Are hostels more realistic or is there a different type of website/search I should be doing to find places that can accomodate a short stay? Thanks for any help!

At $150 a week, you are somewhat limited and you won’t find anything at Docklands at that price. Docklands, however, is well served by public transport as it is a major terminus for trams and trains. This means you can live a little further out where rents are lower.
You really have two options. Furnished short term accommodations are usually called “holiday flats”. You don’t need a lease and usually not a bond but the weekly rent is higher than an ordinary flat. Your second option is to share with someone. Share accommodation is advertised in The Age (and probably the Herald Sun but The Age is the main one). That gets snapped up quickly so you won’t find anything now but it would be worth a look on a Saturday in the classified advertisements to see what is available and the sort of prices being asked. You could also check out holiday apartments in The Age too.
By the way, May/June is the start of winter in Australia and Melbourne can get cold.
