My kitchen floor was tile. To make a shot story, the photo color was peeling after a year, thank you Armstrong, and tiring of fighting with Armstrong over it we gave up.

I palm sanded the entire floor. It was solid and in good shape otherwise. I put a good coat of Kilz over it from Ace Hardware. I then re sanded to get it smooth again. Then using Ace floor and deck enamel, the water base due to smell. They have a special floor enamel. We painted black and white checks, then covered that with water base floor varnish, two coats. It came out beautiful.
 It's been two years now.

Except for the color, black and white, it shows the dirt real bad, we don't have kids, I'd pick a different color, it's the best thing we ever did and, saved money. We took a Royal from Armstrong and Lowes on the tile. The photo top layer bubbled off within three months and neither one would talk to us on it. After six months of arguing on it, we gave up.

I really like the 'floating' laminate floors. They look like hard wood, but are not real wood {thus cheaper} and they just 'click' together and look great! All you need is a roll of Quiet walk padding and the flooring and maybe some moulding for around the outside. It's fast, easy and looks great for not a lot of money! I work in a home supply store and we sell a ton of this stuff - for good reason. It's great! Check your local home supply or design store for more details. Hard wood in the kitchen is the way to go [even if it only LOOKS like hardwood :) } Good Luck!

nothing will look good if it's easy & cheap. there are self-stick tiles (12x12) but will only look as good as the floor your putting them on. you have to remove all linoleum, fill all holes, remove all nails, staples, etc.
indoor/outdoor carpter is an option.

depends a lot on what is under the linoleum. bare floor boards? strip, sand and finish with varathane. plywood? may want to go tile but that may require an underlayment to make it smooth and stable.
