How often do you replace your kitchen sponge?
Do you wait til it’s all yucky and smelly? Do you use it for dishes and for wiping down counters?
It’s a point of contention in my home and inquiring minds want to know what others do. Thanks!

I have two kitchen sponges: one for dishes the other for cats’ dishes.
I wash them once a week in the dishwasher and change them once a month.
When I clean my sinks I spray a bleach solution on them to keep them bacteria free once a day.
do not wait for yucky smelly, toss before.
The same time only use for cleaning the bacteria every week plus when you nuke it releases enough moister that can clean the dishes have different cloths use the.
I change my kitchen sponges when it seems to me that my dishes are being cleaned the way I want them to be which would be before they become smelly. That would come out to be about every month and I don’t use it for wiping down counters cause I don’t have any counters in my apartment.
I wait until it starts to get yucky and smelly ( usually around 2-3 months). I use it for dishes and countertops.
I replace it when it gets really grungy but I put it in the dishwasher every time I run it…
no you don’t wait til it get nasty.
i replace my sponge every week ,no i have one for dishes and one to wipe counters off with.then one in the bathroom.i use bleach for everything.
usually after 20-25 days you should replace it, because else it would become smelly. if you want to avoid your sponge to smell, put it in lemon water after use.
I normally replace the sponge every month. I have one for the dishes and one for the counter tops. After each use I use bleach to disinfect them.
I change mine every month, it get´s worn out , as I pop it in the washing machine almost every night with the dirty tea towels
I don’t use a sponge in the kitchen because they get yucky too fast. Dish clothes do the job and can be thrown in the washing machine daily, if needed.
The counter top and buy one every half week and soak in how water with.
I just want to comment that using sponges for surfaces that come in contact with food is not recommended. Restaurants are banned from using sponges anywhere. Bacteria require moisture to grow. A sponge takes the longest to dry out since it is designed to retain moisture. A dish cloth is preferred because it can be dryed faster and more thoroughly than a sponge. A dishcloth ( cotton) will stand up to bleach solutions better than a sponge, a sponge will deteriorate in bleach.
Yes, people do microwave a sponge to kill bacteria ( that is where the odor comes from) but the entire sponge must be heated past a minimum of 140 degrees for at least one minute to kill bacteria. If a sponge is left at room temp with any moisture it is a bacteria buffet, and then wipe a counter with it?!! Bleach and high temps kill the bacteria that grow in moist conditions.
I prefer a dishcloth that I dry over the faucet or sink partition after every use.
Yucky and smelly means bacteria!!!
I replace mine monthly but I also stick it into the dishwasher to wash and sanitize with my dishes. I use a washrag for my counters and wash that every time I am finished with the kitchen.
I do not use kitchen sponges. They smell bad and unless you soak them daily in bleach water, they are dangerous. Switch to scrub brushes for the kitchen and keep a wash cloth on hand for wiping things down. They can be laundered frequently. I do recommend disposable disifencting wipes to wash clothes, just because they are easier.
