Can’t I just use a conventional kitchen sponge to replace an aquarium filter sponge?
My aquarium filter sponge need replacing. I’m quite not keen to spend to buy the proper one. Can I just use a new kitchen sponge that has about same porosity as the old aquarium sponge?

no
what if your parent’s “weren’t keen to spend to buy” to buy you food?
kitchen sponges have antifungal chemicals on then that would kill your fish in about 5 minutes
spend the extra $5 and get a real one

Yes you can, provide it is a brand new that has been used before.
even if it brand new, I would wash it thoroughly in hot water before using. Matter of fact many use kitchen sponges since they excellent filter media due to their large surface, area. Larger surface area means more beneficial bacteria.
I have seen some even use a then kitchen sponges in their wet/dry filter due to their large surface area.
EDIT To the person that bacteria will not grow on the sponge compared to the fancy filter media. Matter of fact, some of medis for canister filter are made of the same material you ordinary household sponge.

NO the conventional one probably has chemicals on it from past uses and is not designed to let water flow through it you would probably loose some filter flow and bacteria would probably not grow on it as well as a fancy fish sponge and the bacteria keep your nitrates down
i dont think so i think the sponge would be 2 dense 4 the water 2 pass tru meaning less bacteria 2 break down the ammonia, more surface area more bacteria
BIGgourami wins. He’s one of the smartest people in the fish section. Just listen to him, he’ll never do ya wrong. Even new, never before used sponges do have chemicals in them, and they would be way worse as a media for bacteria. If you can’t make yourself spend an extra $5 on your fish, you shouldn’t have bought them. They’re not decorations. Learn what you’re talking about, or just don’t answer. Wrong information is not helpful.
